Bridgeport Public Library HistoryCharles Henry Morrill donated to the Bridgeport Library in 1919. Charles Henry Morrill was prominent in Nebraska, particularly the panhandle area. In 1873, after moving his family from New Hampshire to a homestead in Eastern Nebraska, Morrill worked as a private secretary to Governor Nance of Nebraska and became the President of the Bank of Stromsburg, Nebraska in 1883-1890. He was a member of the Board of Regents of Nebraska State University from 1890-1903. He was an advocate for preserving history and helped preserve many of the fossils found at the Agate National Monument, an internationally recognized fossil site near Harrison, Nebraska. The Nebraska State Museum at The University of Nebraska still houses most of that geological collection today. Charles Morrill was also well known for helping the Burlington Railroad explore the vast Midwest, finding ideal routes for new railroad lines. In 1898, Morrill claims to have purchased the actual land for the town site of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, playing a hand in the upcoming sugar beet industry. The City of Morrill and the County of Morrill were named in his honor. Charles Morrill believed that anything above his personal financial needs should go towards the growth of a community. His giving nature helped fund many projects, including the Bridgeport Public Library, with a monetary donation of $500 in the year 1919. Many of his endeavors included writing an extensive autobiography, describing his experiences in the Civil War, his many travels throughout the United States and Europe, plus events in his family life. Morrill was also known to be a good friend of the legendary William "Buffalo Bill" Cody. Morrill died in 1922 at the age of 79. Charles Morril's book (journal), The Morrills and Reminiscences, can be read on NEGenWeb Project, a Nebraska genealogy website. |
