BRIDGEPORT WATER SYSTEM PROJECT FACT SHEET

2006

Why does this project need to be done?

The community of Bridgeport has always had uranium in its water system.  What has changed is the uranium limit allowed by the Environment Protection Agency (EPA).  After research, EPA lowered the level of uranium allowed in public water systems.  EPA's role is protecting public health by ensuring sage drinking water and protecting ground-water.  The city is under administrative order to address the uranium level.

What has been done so far?

The city is providing bottled water to city residents for consumption, and has provided reverse osmosis treatment systems to businesses with high drinking water uses.  The city is moving forward to determine the most cost-effective long-term solution to make Bridgeport's water safe.

What impact does uranium have on water consumers?

The level of uranium found in Bridgeport's water is weakly radioactive.  A person can be exposed to uranium by inhaling dust in air or by ingesting water and food.  The general population is exposed to uranium primarily through food and water.

The greatest health risk from large intakes of uranium is toxic damage to the kidneys, because, in addition to being weakly radioactive, it is a toxic metal.  It also increases your risk of getting cancer.  Since uranium tends to concentrate in specific locations in the body, risk of cancer of the bone, liver cancer, and blood diseases are increased.  (Source: EPA)

What other communities are facing the same issue?

Uranium in water is primarily an issue for groundwater states.  Many communities located in the North Platte Valley are facing the same issue.  These communities are starting to communicate with each other about joint alternatives.

What does this mean for the future?

The city needs to develop a water system that will provide a long-term solution to water quality issues, and meet current and future regulations of both the EPA and Nebraska Health and Human Services.

How much will this cost residents?

At this time, a specific cost to residents is not known.

How can I keep informed about the project?

This is the first of three public meetings that will be held regarding the project.  The second meeting will present results of the study, and the third meeting will discuss the next steps in this process.
